Institute Venue
The Sustainability Action Summer Institute will be held at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center (ICC), located at 50 Warren St. [map] in the heart of historic downtown Lowell. The ICC overlooks the canals of the city and the Concord River and is in walking distance to specialty shops, historical attractions, restaurants, art museums, and galleries.
The UMass Lowell Inn is managed by Aramark. It is our understanding that Armark is pursuing an environmental stewardship program that promotes sustainability through the use of: environment-friendly procurement policies, sustainable food & local purchasing options, energy & water conservation efforts, and waste reduction strategies. Logan International Airport, Manchester Airport and all the attractions of historic Boston are less than 45 minutes from Lowell.

Lodging for the Sustainability Action Summer Institute is available at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center (ICC). From Route 93 North (Boston, Logan Airport)
Follow Route 93 North to Exit 44B (495 South). Take Exit 35C For the Lowell Connector to the end, Exit 5C. At the lights take a left onto Gorham St. After the third traffic light get into the right lane and prepare to take your next right onto Church St. Take the first left onto George St., which will take you into our parking lot.
From Route 93 South
Follow 93 South to Exit 44. Take Exit 35C for the Lowell Connector to the end, Exit 5C. From Route 128 and 95

From Rhode Island

Air/Taxi/Public Transportation Travel
To and From the Airport: Boston Logan International Airport is located ~25 miles (45 minutes) from Lowell. Travel options to and from the airport include an airport shuttle bus/taxi or public transportation.
The Manchester Airport in Manchester, NH, is about 21 miles from Lowell.
Taxi/Airport Shuttle
The easiest option to get from either Manchester or Boston to Lowell is Flightline Inc. Flightline offers shared and private van transport from either aiport to the Doubletree Hotel in Lowell for around $60.00 each way. Please note that you should make reservations 1-2 days in advance if possible. To find out more about Flightline services, visit their website.
Regular taxis charge in the range of $80-$90 to get to Lowell from Logan Airport.

Public Transportation
Taking public transportation to Lowell is a bit of an adventure, yet sustainability-minded folks are accustomed to such journeys. The trip by public transportation may take up to 2 hours given waiting time. The directions below outline the four main stages of your journey from Logan Airport to Lowell using public transportation. Links to schedules are provided where available.
1. Airport Shuttle Bus to Subway Station
- Exit airport baggage claim
- Take a free, MASSPORT bus, labeled “Airport subway station”. The shuttle labels may change, so ask the bus driver if you're on the right shuttle to go to the airport subway station.
2. MBTA Subway [schedule and map]
- 1-way fare = $2.00 or $1.70 if using a “Charlie card”
- From the airport, take the Blue line “inbound” “Bowdoin” train 3 stops to “State Street”
- Transfer to Orange line “outbound” “Oak Grove” train
- Travel 2 stops to North Station
- Follow signs to commuter rail station
3. Commuter Rail/Train [schedule and map]
- 1-way fare = $6.75 (purchase at ticket window, fare may be more expensive if purchased on the train)
- Take train to Lowell (last stop on Lowell line)
4. Lowell City Bus [schedule]
Please be aware: there is no bus service on Sunday in Lowell. If arriving in Lowell by train on a Sunday, take a taxi to the Inn and Conference Center. Contact information for taxi providers is located in the Lowell train station.
- 1-way fare = $1.00
- Option 1: take the Downtown circulator bus to the District Court/Hurd Street Stop. Ask driver to point you in the direction of the UMass Inn and Conference Center (old Doubletree Hotel)
- Option 2: take the Downtown shuttle. No stops are noted on the schedule, so tell the bus driver you’re going to the UMass Inn and Conference Center (old Doubletree Hotel) and to tell you the best stop.
