Biography

Catherine Galligan manages the Sustainable Hospitals Program (SHP) and its major research effort, Project SHARRP (Safe Homecare and Risk Reduction for Providers), at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The mission of the SHP is to provide technical assistance to reduce occupational and environmental hazards in the healthcare industry. This is accomplished through a combination of on-site research, educational outreach, and publications on timely topics. As a result of its work, the SHP is a familiar name and well respected resource for medical practitioners, regulators, industry groups and advocacy groups.

As an engineer, Catherine brings a unique and helpful perspective to pollution prevention and occupational safety and health. She is a hands-on manager with 9 years at the Sustainable Hospitals Program (SHP) and over 20 years engineering and production management experience in the manufacturing industry, including medical device manufacturing and production start-ups.

While working in industry, Catherine utilized innovative manufacturing techniques and team-based operations to enhance productivity and foster decision-making. Catherine received her Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Tufts University and holds Master of Science Degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (Manufacturing Engineering) and the University of Massachusetts Lowell (Work Environment; with concentrations in Ergonomics and Industrial Hygiene).
