Biography
As Research Associate at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, Melissa Coffin works on projects relating to the precautionary principle and the advancement of comprehensive chemicals policy. She coordinates the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council, a business network seeking green chemistry solutions. Melissa also organized discussions with a diverse stakeholder group and interviewed environmental leaders for the Toward Tomorrow Initiative, a project that developed a common agenda for health and the environment.
Prior to the Lowell Center, Melissa participated in efforts by environmental and public health communities in the city of Boston to pass legislation limiting the public's exposure to toxic chemicals.
Melissa received her M.A. in Regional Economic and Social Development from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2009, her thesis focusing on "The Impact of Trichlorethylene Alternatives in Metal Cleaning Applications on the Worker Experience." Melissa also has a degree in Environmental Studies from Northeastern University, and in Ecology and Environmental Technology from Paul Smith's College.
