Biography
Dr. Markkanen is a research faculty member in the Department of Work Environment and at the Sustainable Hospitals Program of the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. Currently, her research duties consist of investigating occupational exposures and preventive interventions in the healthcare industry, safety in the homecare industry, mercury elimination in healthcare, safe cleaning practices in healthcare, and occupational safety and health (OSH) policy concerns. In 2004, she earned a doctor of science degree in Work Environment from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her doctoral dissertation on working conditions of home-based shoemakers in Indonesia and in the Philippines was awarded with the Work Environment Department’s scholarship award of 2004. In 1992, she earned a masters of science degree in chemical engineering from the Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland. Dr. Markkanen’s earlier OSH experience comes from the United Nation’s International Labour Organization (ILO) where she served such projects as the International Programme for the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) and Asian-Pacific Regional Programme on Occupational Safety and Health (ASIAOSH).
