Reducing Exposures to Reverse Rates of Chronic Disease
Cancer and the Environment
Reducing Environmental Causes of Breast Cancer
The Lowell Center is housing a state-wide initiative to reduce the risk of breast cancer using the best available evidence to identify and eliminate exposures to environmental toxins and to develop and disseminate practical alternatives to chemicals of concern. The Environmental Health Program is analyzing breast cancer and environment tracking data to identify high-risk populations, disparities, and promising avenues for prevention research.
In partnership with renowned breast cancer researchers, citizens and breast cancer prevention groups, the Lowell Center is also developing and administering an innovative new prevention-oriented cancer research program. Funds supporting the first year of this initiative are also being used to support Silent Spring Institute’s efforts to develop an exposure tracking and reduction program for Massachusetts homes in areas with higher and/or disproportionate breast cancer risk. The initiative will evaluate effective methods to protect drinking water sources from endocrine disruptors—agents known to contribute to breast cancer risk and survival and possible contributors to a host of other diseases.
