About the Program
The Sustainable Hospitals Program (SHP) was initiated at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1998 to provide science-based technical guidance to the healthcare industry for selecting products and practices that promote occupational and environmental health and safety. Based within the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP), the SHP aims to fully integrate occupational and environmental health and safety into comprehensive solutions for more sustainable healthcare. Traditionally, pollution prevention and occupational safety and health have been approached as separate issues. As a result a solution for one may merely shift a new problem into the other. The underlying premise of the SHP is that integrating pollution prevention with occupational safety and health results in more sound and appropriate solutions.
Currently, our key research areas include the following:
- Safe Home Care Project
- Mercury elimination in Mexico and Ecuador
- Cleaning in healthcare [PDF document]
