What's the Opportunity?

Clean technologies are a rapidly growing sector of the economy.  According to the Cleantech Venture Network, interest from the full spectrum of investors in clean technologies has surged in the past two years.  Venture capital investment alone increased to $1.6 billion in 2005 representing a 35% increase over 2004.

In Massachusetts, the following areas already exist and are growing in investment, employment, research and markets:

  • Clean energy and climate change mitigation
  • Less toxic, safer materials, processes and products
  • Biobased materials and bioprocessing
  • Material and product reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling
  • High performance green building.
To compete in the global economy, Massachusetts, a major exporter to Europe and Asia, will need to comply to new environmental regulations.  A focus on Clean Tech will help companies stay ahead of the curve in competing internationally.  It will also help companies who compete locally keep up with demand for products that are less harmful to people and the environment.
