Massachusetts’ strengths in the following areas give the state a head start in developing Clean Tech products, services and technologies:

  • A strong manufacturing base
    Manufacturing accounts for $100 billion of the Massachusetts economy.
  • A strong innovation economy
    Leading colleges, universities, business schools, high tech companies, research centers such as the Center for Green Chemistry at UMass Lowell.
  • Strong export ties
    In 2005, Massachusetts exports accounted for $24.043 billion.  More than 42% of current Massachusetts exports are destined for Europe.
  • Strong business support systems
    The Toxics Use Reduction Institute, the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance, UMass Boston’s Center for Environmental Business and Technology, the Renewable Energy Trust, the Green Roundtable, the Massachusetts Manufacturing Partnership.
  • A strong investment record
    The Northeast holds the number one position in Clean Tech investment activity--$164.4 million in the 4th quarter of 2005.
  • Strong industry leaders in environmental technologies
